SANS 1557:2019 Edition 4 48 D.3.2 Ingredients for phase 2 Water 53,57 g Phenylbensimidazole sulfonic acid 2,78 g Sodium hydroxide (45 % solution) 0,9 g Methylparaben 0,3 g Disodium EDTA 0,1 g D.3.3 Ingredients for phase 3 Water 20,0 g Carbomer (grade 980) 0,3 g Sodium hydroxide (45 % solution) 0,3 g D.3.4 Preparation D.3.4.1 Heat the ingredients of phase 1 (see D.3.1) at a temperature between 75 °C and 80 °C. C.3.4.2 Heat the ingredients of phase 2 (see D.3.2) at 80 °C. If necessary, increase the heat until the solution is clear and cool to a temperature between 75 °C and 80 °C. D.3.4.3 While stirring phase 2, add the phase 1 mixture (see D.3.4.1). D.3.4.4 Disperse the carbomer (see D.3.3) in water by stirring with a rotor dispenser and add the sodium hydroxide. D.3.4.5 While stirring the mixture in D.3.4.3, add ingredients for phase 3 (see D.3.3) and homogenize for 3 min. D.3.4.6 Adjust the pH with sodium hydroxide or lactic acid and stir until completely cool. D.3.4.7 Compensate for waterloss (for example, make up to 100 g) and homogenize. D.3.5 Physicochemical data Appearance: White to slightly yellowish emulsion pH: 7,5 ± 0,5 Viscosity (20 °C): 500 mPa·s to 750 mPa·s (Rheomat RM 180-Mobile 3, 200 r/min; time of assessment: 10 min) 1 800 mPa·s to 3 000 mPa·s (Haake VT 181 Rheometer, Rotary body MV II ST, Process U = 4, time of assessment: 20 s) 1 300 cps to 3 500 cps (RVT Spindle 4, 20 r/min) Density (20 °C): 0,970 g/cm 3 ± 0,05 g/cm 3 D.3.6 Storage The P3 reference sunscreen formulation shall be stored at 20 °C for 12 months, in a container that is protected from light. © SABS © SABS.
