SANS 1557:2019 Edition 4 47 D.2.4 Preparation C.2.4.1 Heat the ingredients of phase 1 (see D.2.1) at a temperature between 77 °C and 82 °C while mixing with a propeller agitator until uniform. D.2.4.2 Mix phase 2 ingredients (see D.2.2) with a propeller agitator at a temperature between 77 °C and 82 °C. D.2.4.3 Add the phase 1 preparation (see D.2.4.1) to the phase 2 preparation (see D.2.4.2) and mix until smooth and uniform. D.2.4.4 Slowly cool the mixture to a temperature between 49 °C and 54 °C. D.2.4.5 Add phase 3 ingredients (see D.2.3) and mix until smooth and uniform. D.2.4.6 Cool the mixture to a temperature between 35 °C and 41 °C. D.2.4.7 Compensate for waterloss (for example, make up to 100 g) and homogenize. Avoid air entrapment. D.2.4.8 Cool the mixture further to a temperature between 27 °C and 32 °C. D.2.5 Physiochemical data Appearance: White, yellowish fluid emulsion pH: 8,0 ± 0,5 Viscosity (20 °C): 250 mPa·s to 400 mPa·s (Rheomat RM 180-Mobile 3, 200 r/min; time of assessment: 10 min) 8400 cps to 13 000 cps (RVT Helipath B 10 r/min) Density (20 °C): 0,970 g/cm 3 ± 0,05 g/cm 3 D.2.6 Storage The P2 reference sunscreen formulation shall be stored at 20 °C for 12 months, in a container that is protected from light.
